CK Science helps school children in West Africa

CK Science has once again sent financial aid to a school in the poverty stricken country of Burkina Faso. With over 250 school age children attending, St Mary’s School in Titao provides an extremely rare commodity for the rural area – free education.

Established by St Mary’s School in Derbyshire over 8 years ago, CK Science has been dedicated to bridging the difference between government donations and the amount required to ensure that all school children receive a free meal each day.

Recently Sr Susan of St Mary’s in Chesterfield revisited the school to see how the teachers and children were getting on.

CK Science Launch New Website with Candidate Focus

CK Science, the leading scientific recruitment consultancy, launched an interactive new website this year. The new site has two main goals, which includes:

  1. Enhancing the candidate experience by simplifying the search facility
  2. Providing a more personal service by increasing the candidate’s ability to communicate with their CK consultant.

The bold decision has been taken to place the candidate experience firmly at the centre of the website’s functionality, whether it’s for a proximity-based job search, or to identify the best CK Consultant to help according to location, discipline or employment preference.

The new site introduces technologies and functionalities that have not been used in scientific recruitment before, once again showing that CK Science is a leader in their field. The new tools include:

  • A candidate-only zone (CK+) which enables applicants to personalise their registration space, store and amend their CV and save job searches.
  • A corporate video which captures the personality of CK Science.
  • The facility to request a Skype call with a Consultant to get a more personalised service.
  • A one-stop shop for candidates needing advice on searching for a new job, getting the most from their CV or improving their interview technique.  All the career information and advice is now located in one place (Career Zone) for reference or to be browsed at leisure.

Jonathan Hart-Smith, Managing Director of CK Science, said, “Customer service is key to the CK Group so we are always looking at ways to improve the online experience.  Whether it’s simplifying the application process or modernising the look and feel of the site, we like to add value wherever we can.  I feel our new website captures that perfectly and additional services such as CK+ will ensure our customer relationships stay fresh and continue to go from strength to strength.”

Jonathan continues, ”However this has become more to us than just having a good shop front.  We are now looking at other ways to enhance our online offering to make our website the very best place to go for Science jobs and career advice.”

We are already seeing an increase in visitors since the new site has been launched and this will only increase in 2014 as the site grows and develops.

UK Government invest £350 million in to science post graduates

The BBC has reported that the UK government has announced that they will be investing £350 million in to training postgraduates to work in engineering and science.  The money will go to new “centres for doctoral training” at 24 universities around the UK.  The idea is that students will receive the work-based skills and knowledge needed in these key industries.

The government has given to the UK’s most important sector which  include aerospace, pharmaceuticals, medicine and “high-value manufacturing”. These sectors have been experiencing a skills gap in recent years.

EPSRC chair Paul Golby said: “Centres for Doctoral Training have already proved to be a great success and the model is popular with students, business and industry. These new centres will give the country the highly trained scientists and engineers it needs and they will be equipped with skills to move on in their careers. The standard of applications for Centres was very high and more could have been funded if we had the capacity.”

UK research team – close to a treatment for baldness

The BBC have reported that a UK and US research study have released results stating they have moved a step closer to reversing receding hairlines after human hair was grown in the laboratory.

The scientists at the University of Durham, in the UK, and Columbia University Medical Centre, in the US have undertook a study where they are trying to reduce hair loss.

They were focussing on trying to actually grow new hairs. After six weeks of the study, new hair follicles formed in five out of the seven cases and some new tiny hairs began to form.
Prof Colin Jahoda, from Durham University, told the BBC a cure for baldness was possible but it was too soon for men to be hanging up the toupee.
