Dundee Research Centre Granted £24 million

The University of Dundee’s research centre for the treatment of human diseases has been granted £24 million to continue its work over the next five years, reports Life Sciences Scotland.

The grant has come thanks to the taxpayer, something the Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council Sir John Savill believes to be fantastic. He said “It is important for people to know how crucial their own money has been in uncovering health improvements” such as the MRI scanner.

The funding will allow for the research facility to add a number of new scientists to the team. The work undertaken at the research centre has is part of a worldwide effort, that through various grants has been able to support over 160 staff in over 25 countries. The MRC is dedicated to funding some of the leading medical research in the world through reinvestment of taxpayer’s money.

North West Wales Gets Tech Jobs Boost

The creation of hundreds of technology and energy jobs in North West Wales has taken a significant step forward with the appointment of Ieuan Wyn Jones as the Director of Menai Science Park.

The project, being championed by Bangor University, is aiming to join academic researchers with commercial expertise in one, as yet undecided, site. The development of the energy industry and clean technology will be the main reason as to the establishment of the science park, with everything from nuclear to biomass schemes being advanced on Anglesey. The Welsh government has already put in £10 million, with Anglesey also looking to be made into an Enterprise Zone to give company’s incentives to set up in the park.

The idea behind the establishment of the park is for Bangor University to initially set up researchers in laboratories on site, thereby attracting related businesses. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John G. Hughes, believes this to be a “very exciting initiative which has tremendous potential.” Whilst no location has yet been chosen, several locations are being discussed as to their suitability. Mr Wyn Jones, who has stepped down from the Welsh Assembly to take the post, is “fiercely committed to… creating a better economy for Anglesey and North West Wales.” He believes his skills and expertise will ensure the park “plays a leading role in strengthening and broadening” the economic base of the area.

Synthetic human blood gets go-ahead in Scotland

As reported on bbc.co.uk/news.  Scottish scientists have moved one step closer to conducting clinical trials of synthetic human blood thanks to the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare product Regulatory Agency (MHRA).BBC News story

Having been awarded a licence by the MHRA, researchers at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, Edinburgh University and Roslin Cells are able to use stem cells to manufacture blood that could eventually be tested on people.

The licence means a manufacturing facility, which will be based at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) can be set up to work on human cell therapy products with the aim of producing blood that will be fit for clinical trials.

The synthetic blood would be used to help help supply shortages and prevent infections being passed on through donations.

Biodiesel developed using bacteria

As reported in chemweek.com. UK researchers at the University of Essex have developed technology that enables that them to produce biodiesel from the E. coli bacteria. The technology is almost identical to conventional biofuel, is still in trial.   The E. coli bacteria naturally turn sugars into fat, to build their cell membranes and the synthetic fuel oil molecules can be created by harnessing this natural oil production process.

“Replacing conventional diesel with a carbon neutral biofuel in commercial volumes would be a tremendous step toward meeting our target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Global demand for energy is rising, and a fuel that is independent of both global oil price fluctuations and political instability is an increasingly attractive prospect,” says John Love, professor of biosciences at the University of Exeter.

Big Biotech companies proving more valuable

Pharmatimes reports today that big biotech companies are frequently demonstrating that they are better positioned to respond to the needs of the healthcare system than big pharmaceutical companies.

As healthcare shifts towards a new value-based focus biotech companies have been seen to outpace their pharmaceutical counterparts in terms of growth income, investment in R&D and market cap over the past three years, according to analysis undertake by life science financial services firm, Burrill & Co.

“As the industry migrates away from an era of the one-size-fits-all blockbuster, the biotechnology industry’s strength at developing innovative therapies that meet unmet medical needs and target the molecular mechanisms of diseases gives it an upper hand in creating value,” said the firm’s chief executive, G Steven Burrill.

Big Biotech experienced a 57% increase in market cap for the three years ended December 31, 2012, as the total value of the group climbed to $260.6 billion from $160.1 billion at the end of 2009, says the analysis. That compared to a 17.4% increase for Big Pharma during the same period as the market cap for the group climbed to a collective $1,257 billion from $1,070 billion.

“The big jump in the value of Big Biotech companies is not just a matter of investor speculation – these companies have had significant clinical and market successes that have driven their value higher,” Mr Burrill points out.
